LOCAL HONORARY CHAIR
Tracey, 2019 Gutsy Walk Local Honorary Chair
My name is Tracey, and I'm honoured to have been asked to be the Honorary Chair for Saint John's Gutsy Walk 2019. I was diagnosed with Crohn's disease in 2012. I remember that time vividly as being the lowest point for my health. I was losing weight, couldn’t keep anything down and my immune system was shot. I lost so much weight and didn't realize the effect that it had until I saw my sister who I hadn't seen in a couple of months. She hugged me and recoiled since she was shocked at how bony I was. Even the people I saw every day noticed the drastic difference in my body and energy. I was weak and feeble, feelings I hated since I'm a go getter. I had infections that had to be cleared up prior to starting my medication. I had the surgery to remove the fissulas, and I started my treatment shortly after. I slowly regained my strength and weight. As each day went by I started feeling more and more like myself. Since I started the treatment, I've been in remission without any flare ups. However my day to day life changed - I had to eliminate some foods from my usual diet and change my normal eating habits. Now I look for the nearest bathrooms whenever I go someplace new. In fact, that's one of the first things I look up on a map directory as I like to be prepared. I have received amazing support from my family and friends during my journey and I have bounced back because of them. Today, I'm participating in my 6th Gutsy Walk to take steps towards a finding a cure for Crohn's and colitis. I hope to see you all out there on Sunday, June 2, 2019 with your walking shoes on!
